This page provides information about articles that refer to the Southwick Public Llibrary.

The November/December issue of Wrapper the newsletter of the Western Mass. Regional Library System (WMRLS) has two articles on activities at the Southwick Public Library.

The Westfield Evening News (WEN) (the Westfield daily newspaper) provides listings of events at the Southwick Public Library on a ongoing basis. In addition the Library subscribes to the WEN for library users to use.

During the month of May 2010 there have been several articles and editorials in the Republican (the Springfield daily newspaper) as well as in the Boston Globe on the importance of State support for libraries across Mass.  Additionally radio stations including WAMC have run stories on the impact of libraries on the public and the need for adequate funding.

The February 17, 2010 issue of the Boston Globe reported on potential impacts on the branches of the Boston Public Library as a result of projected cuts in State Aid to Libraries.  (April 2010)  It is expected that the six regional libraries systems in Mass. will be merged into one library system in eastern Mass. effective on July 1, 2010.  State Aid to local libraries is expected to be cut some 29 percent for the new fiscal year (beginning July 1, 2010) in line with the cut made earlier this year. 

The July 28, 2009 Mad Science program the Library conducted at the Southwick Town Hall auditorium was featured in a July 29, 2009 front page picture in the Westfield Evening News.

On June 11, 2009 the NBC Television Network program the "TODAY Show" had a short 4 minute segment on public libraries and how in a recession they are serving more customers/patrons with resume writing workshops, Internet use, etc. and at the same time dealing with limited budgets.  If you would like to view this segment click here

Local Budget Impacts in Southwick :

The following information is subject to change depending on the amounts approved at the Annual Town Meeting on May 18, 2010.


It is expected that the budget for books, subscriptions, and other materials in the Library will be cut 10 percent effective July 1 in addition to the 6.9 percent cut in place during the current fiscal year.  The Library is expected to have a little more money for additional staff hours during the new year.
